ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES….Callin You Out!!
What a wonderful morning. I had to implant that saying in my brain before a foreseen grueling and humbling experience. What am I talking about? I think you know. The recession is not color blind, nor does it give a flying hoot about social status. To test the negative opinions of most, I decided to take a journey to the Department of Health and Human Services in Annapolis, MD. Oh yes, I am calling YOU out. I wanted to get a “bird’s eye view,” of the many horror stories heard around the globe from first time and existing applicants. It seems that the complaints are generally the same no matter what county or state you reside in. In general conversations, some of the major concerns are:
· Long lines
· Office not organized
· Rude staff
· No structure
· Lack of empathy
· Understaffed facilities
· Offices opening late
In this day and age, your average unemployed applicant does not have the time or patience for gross negligence, something that is clearly practiced on a day- to- day basis by our government agencies. Americans are searching for a resolution to a rising economic problem. Who would want to play Russian roulette with benefits you are entitled to? Did somebody say the government? Employed Americans during this time of economic crisis can barely afford to eat and spend the gas it takes to get to work. Imagine what is going through the psyche of someone who has tried to apply for unemployment and was denied. Rent is a month behind. The electric bill is scheduled for shut off. There is no food in the refrigerator. To top it all off, you have a rotten tooth that is throbbing. Now start your day in line 8:00am sharp.
Two ladies in their walk in with their Starbucks coffee, manicures, Blackberry still texting, Channel bag and they are five minutes late. You were twenty minutes early. As they scurry to their desks to log on and gossip about the club over the weekend, the civil servant impatiently instructs each applicant as if they were a herd of cows in a meat market to fill out paperwork. This would make anyone feel like they were in a prison lunch line. Now it is time for me to take in the reactions and behavior of the entire staff. People who are seeking assistance are in for an interesting day. Building I was for general intake. You receive your application, get chastised a bit, a couple of snippy replies, and you are off to another alphabet marked building. This could be the same building where you could have done the demeaning intake process as well. Can you say procrastinate? An hour has passed while I watch employees glide in past 9:10a.m. Maybe the employees have a ten minute grace period.
Scratch that, they were on time………….NOT! Did I mention that the staff count was two case workers for the twenty three waiting?
Should one be surprised to turn on the news and find that yet another American has “gone postal”? There is no need to go any further with this. I sat amongst young and old, black and white, low, and middle class applicants. We all came to the same conclusion as we chuckled in disbelief. The government HAS to get it together from the top on down to their receptionist. The staff, organization, and protocols are lackluster. It is time for some immediate improvements.
These local agencies clearly had enough time to prepare for the massive number of employed and unemployed Americans that will be seeking assistance. They need to realize that these same unemployed Americans in need of assistance are the ones that are keeping YOU employed. GET IT TOGETHER!!! No human likes the run-around. Grown folk do not appreciate condescending tones from civil servants that signed off to do their jobs effectively. People do not want to spend a work shift sitting in a help center, to walk away with NO HELP. It is ten minutes to ten and I haven’t been seen. I arrived before 8:00am.

Ladies.........This is For You!!
Female Emcees – Can We Get Some Love?
You do not have to dig deep when doing a Google Search for the current top female emcees. Along with the search, there are even fewer selections listed on the Billboard Charts, let alone receiving radio play. Where are our female lyricists hiding? With the exception of Lil Kim who has an album due to be released later in the spring, and McLyte, who still perform in venues world-wide, Foxy Brown, Remi Martin, and other potential female rap vixens are held back by unsettled legal matters. Other past reigning female artist such as Eve and Queen Latifah promote projects that are dear to their hearts as well as becoming entrepreneurs leading them away from their original craft. What are we left with? We are left with an over-sized vault of local female emcees who perform vigorously to crowds that will receive them on any given open-mic night.
The venues that hold these weekly if not daily club nights are generally for the male dominated emcee. Artists like Boston born Observa www.myspace.com/observa , Empress www.myspace.com/emperessmusic , or Jerkahonis www.myspace.com/tiffdajerk aka Jerko Flow attend these events in the hopes that they can be “put on” without prejudice. Sometimes the female rapper has to appear “hard”, or “down”, to even get an invitation. Do not let this be the reason the hip-hop world is lacking the female emcee. These women can move the crowd just as good as their male counterparts, but what is really lacking is the support from the brothers. I smell a new “Movement” coming on. Toney Smith of Vintage Vibez

These events are geared towards open mic nights featuring male and female emcees. Although the word about these events is being spread through various message boards and community sites, the support is continuously lacking in the female department.
Few promoters or event hosts go the extra mile and host two separate open mic nights leaving one for the male emcee, and the other for the female emcee. The problem with this marriage was made clear to me one Saturday night as I pardoned an open mic night. When the stage is lit for the male performers, the turn-out is packed. Female emcees come out to support their male counterparts in their climb to be the hottest emcee. The following night was not so supportive. Our female emcees are not receiving the same love that they give in return. On any given night, the ladies use any time given to express their lyrical flow to only a handful of peers that come out to support. This unfortunate reoccurring factor does little for the promoter as well, and limits their ability to continue to provide a forum for the female rappers.
We all know that if a venue is booked for two nights where one night there are no patrons to fill the house, there is a significant loss of revenue and out of pocket expense for the promoter. This lack of love for female emcees not only hurts our need for an obvious void in hip-hop, but it limits the people who try their best to get the voice of a female rapper heard in such a male dominated field. I have seen first-hand the talent of our local female emcees. I have seen many hit the scene every week as they step up to the mic whenever the floor is open. The only missing treat was the support of the brothers, the brothers they supported the previous open mic night. Again, where is the love?
Let us go over the underwritten formula for a female emcee to break out into mainstream. You either have to join an all male click, or make it on a top 40 chart with a “breakthrough” song. Just ask Lil Kim, Remy Martin, Eve, Sole, and many others, some we do not remember. Biggie, Big Pun, and the Lox played a key role in the success of these female artists and the industry will not let us forget it. What happened to the day when people respected the flow and not rely on an entourage to help get these ladies to the top?
Artists like Salt-n-Pepa, MC Lyte, and Queen Latifah held it down for years dominating the charts with the respect they deserved. No one did them any favors by coming to their shows. The love was there, but sometimes the best female artists had to get a little help from their homies to be heard. Just ask Yo-Yo and lady of Rage to stamp that one. The solution to this void would be the obvious. If you see a flyer promoting an open mic night for both male and female emcee, please support the females with as much love as you give the males. We are all peers in this hip-hop “Movement”. Show the female emcee that there is a need for them to be heard. You do not know what you are missing.

As I sit on the couch clicking away on the laptop, a video playing on the television grabs my attention. A jam fit to start the new season off caused my head to bob as Flo-Rida and from what I thought a new artist blazes the new release “Shone.” Shone" (Flo Rida The hook grabbed my attention immediately along with the face of the cutie who sang it. This voice carried a familiar sound. A week went by and an email conversation with a friend prompted me to initiate further research. Marcus Ramone Cooper aka Pleasure P Did You Wrong" is the former lead singer of Pretty Ricky.
Pleasure P has gone from young and raunchy to grown and sexy. Do you recall the few seasons where a group of young boys who clearly were misguided in their career, exploded on BET, MTV, and various other pre-award shows? With Pleasure P’s second breakthrough performance and hopefully many more collaborations, we have a fresh new voice in R&B. Just check out “Boyfriend # 2 if you have not heard it yet. You will find that his music is much classier than his former group, and it appeals to grown up fan base. Be on the lookout for the rebirth of an artist. You are officially in the mix.

In 2008 he released his solo debut single, "Did You Wrong," which quickly charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and though it only reached the top 90 on the US charts, it was successful for an unprecedented debut, and charted high on the R&B Charts and Airplay Charts. His solo debut album, tentatively titled The Introduction of Marcus Cooper, is scheduled for release on June 9, 2009. It was originally going to be released in January but got pushed back to March 31, then to May 5, and now is scheduled to be released June 9. Pleasure P's career received a boost by being featured in the second single from Flo Rida's upcoming album "R.O.O.T.S.", gaining much publicity from his presence on its guest list. Pleasure P also released a 2008 EP entitled "Boyfriend #2", including "Did You Wrong" and a promo single "Boyfriend #2", released digitally and as an LP disc."The reason I named it that is because Pretty Ricky introduced you all to Pleasure P, but now Pleasure P is going to introduce you to Marcus Cooper, which is my government name," says the 24-year-old, who left his post as lead singer of the group last year.

INDEPENDENT ARTISTS “SHOWED AND PROVED” MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
When I search for an adjective to describe my Memorial Day weekend in the DMV, nothing comes to mind. This was a day where all bets were off. Independent artists came to show and prove what they were made of. Once again, April Watts hosted her second taping of WHW Rocks opening the stage to the DMV’s local artist. www.whwweb.com This new line-up included various artists in many different genres. Ten acts graced the stage, each with their own energy and flair. You may have heard the buzz around the DMV involving the birth of a networking empire of independent artists on the rise. I have witnessed a social gathering of fresh new artists, management teams, producers, and sponsors become a part of history in the making. Music, comedy, and theater come together and merge with community leaders and organizers and open doors for the longevity of this movement while giving back.
Angela Byrd, who is the Executive Director of the DC Metropolitan Foster and Adoptive Parent Association www.dcmfapa.org , is passionate about music and her city. Did I mention that Angela is also the COO of Diamond Management www.keyonte.com, home of Keyonte & 24Sevn? I was also excited that the lovely Ms. Watts allowed me to plug DMVRADIO.NET during the live taping. With DMVRADIO.NET’s commitment to giving the Washington metropolitan area “Radio that Represents You”, and April Watts headlining a movement to showcase independent artists with WHW Rocks, the opportunities are endless. At the end of each taping, Ms. Watts welcomes the audience to send anyone who wants their music to be heard along with contact information.
So here are a couple of highlights that caught my eye. Keyonte is a smooth R&B vocalist who graced the stage in what seemed to be his second home. This gentlemen is a Grammy award nominee for his songwriting on “Strong Woman” http://www.theloveexperience.com . I just knew from the start to finish that this was going to be a good line-up. Jamie Jones brought attitude, fire, and a powerful voice, along with her back-up dancers to let the audience know that SHE is here. What you see is what you get. This ball of flames roared onto the set belting out three of her singles that left my bones aching the next day. I thought that I was twenty one again, dancing all over the place. www.myspace.com/itsjamiejones This North Carolina native representing the DMV holds working with Kwame, yes I said Kwame, to her credits as well.
The fun and excitement did not stop with the musical artists. Between set changes, the audience had the pleasure of multiple heart palpitations caused by the hilarious comedians provided to hold our attention and the energy flowing. You had no idea that the person you were conversing with in the audience would step up and tickle your funny bone. Comedians like Seaton Smith, www.seatonsmith.com Erin Jackson, who you may remember appearing on Ellen http://www.erinjackson.net , and the one and only “Bishop of Comedy” TL Fitz http://www.freewebs.com/thebishopofcomedy . Erin Jackson had the crowd rolling with her smooth girlfriend delivery of hilarious stories and encounters. The “Bishop” had us laughing during taping, after taping, and during taping again. Seaton Smith was a welcomed return as well rambling scenarios that make A.D.D seem like a good thing…………..It WAS!!
All in all, the DMV is a good place for networking and meeting new people in the industry or your preference. The platform is set and the venues are here. The only thing left to do is SHOW AND PROVE. Independent artists…..all you have to do is show your passion, energy, and drive. Let your managers do the rest. If I were an independent artist that had the opportunities such as these placed before me, I would hope on it like “white on rice”.

When the nineties hit, we began to see a rebirth of this trend hit the hip-hop world. This virus spread by small appearances of models standing next to the artist fulfilling her contractual obligations as good “eye candy.” Eminem’s video “Without Me”, paid homage to female porn stars Jena Jamison and Raven. If you were not aware, Jena Jamison is the Elvis of females in the adult entertainment industry. A self made millionaire so to speak. Soon, other hip hop artists followed this rising trend. Vanessa Del Rio is considered to be the cream of the crop as well. There are and were mountains of request for cameos in film and in music. Her name is also the hook and catch phrase slipping through 16 bars in many studios.
Soon, other hip artists followed. These sightings did not come across the television screen once in a while, but quite often. The repetition grew and introduced a make shift marriage between hip-hop and adult entertainment. Artists like 50 Cent, Flo Rida, Snoop Dogg, Big Boi, and many more indulge in their attempts to let the world know that they have either met, know, or have had business or personal relationships with people in the adult entertainment industry. My question is…………….. Is the mainstream public ready to be guest of this informal union? Unfortunately this slow infiltration is ever growing despite the vigorous censorship attempts of those prudes on Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court. When I went to Erotica LA 2007, I was exposed to a world that I would never envision. I only saw this kind of Erotica on the Playboy Channel or through my dirty collections of pleasurable DVDs. Meeting people in the adult entertainment industry was an extremely exciting and intoxicating experience for me, being a closet freak and all. Aside from my visit to Amsterdam, viewing Jenna Jamison, Evan Stone, and Ron Germy, I had no clue I was mixing and mingling with the best of them. I felt like Nicole Kidman without Tom Cruise because I did not want my eyes to be shut. That is exactly how I wanted it. I purposely did not watch any porn because being a NEO erotic writer in this industry. I did not want to make any preconceived notions or judgments. I wanted to talk to these entertainers and know them as a person, and not porn stars. I could look at them and have a moderate conversation without visions of them in the buff performing. As a result, I met a host of great industry stars amateur and professional. I had the time of my life. Tre’ Chamborg is hooked. I’m taking baby steps on this one guys. Please be gentle. These indie artists continuously search for a platform to express and share their various forms of creativity. There is one key factor that allows our city to stand out from the rest. I soaked in the creativity of these indie artists as Mzery kicked the flow, Sasha commandeered the drums, Chin singing in her blues turned soulful voice, Clair picking her guitar, and Liz chilling on the bass. Mzery turned out to be a great day for me and as I enjoyed their company. Thanks to the great passion of April Watts and many others in the DMV area, independent artists are seen and heard. Hip-Hop Meets Ballroom Dancing
When this seasons “Dancing with the Stars” announced their line-up, my jaw instantly went south, and my face resembled that of a “deer stuck in headlights.” Aside from the fact that the show is a hit, “Dancing with the Stars” was a guilty pleasure for me as well as many others. The appearance of Lil Kim has changed my opinion from corny to interesting. This season I found myself anticipating Monday night. The media buzz surrounding Lil Kim’s participation in ABC’s long running dance series topped the morning talk shows and has been a comedian’s dream when it comes to one line jokes. Could Lil Kim possibly bring it “Hard Core?” Past seasons of the show have proven to be entertaining but not perceived to be taken seriously as the professionals do. Lil Kim has obviously found her niche’.

If I did not know any better, I would think that Lil Kim wanted to be a dancer well before we saw her riding the escalator with Puff Daddy. This rap vixen has surely proven that hip-hop is a force to be reckoned with in all genres. This powerhouse is giving her all in accomplishing what African American before her could not. People who are born and raised in Washington, DC are aware of what Go-Go music represents, but for those who do not, let me paint you a small picture. Imagine the scene in “The Matrix 3” where everyone dancing in slow motion, bodies close, music loud energy flowing. You could feel the heat of the drums, base, percussion, and chimes. Now adjust the speed with original lyrics, as well as the top-rated cover songs in hip-hop, and you have Go-Go music. We always hear about the negative press about DC’s diamond in the ruff , but the true originality or impact of this music is rarely highlighted. This music has influenced many artists in the industry since the mid to late 80’s. Artists like Juvenile, 50 Cent, Ludicrous, and Doug E Fresh have shared the stage with the DMV’s local bands when in town. Some Rare Essence fans may still argue that a famous Jay Z hit was a borrowed original. http://www.rareessence.com/. We have seen videos featuring the our unique sounds from top notch artists including Jill Scott, Salt-n-Pepa, The Roots, Missy Elliot, Lil John, MC Hammer. Spike Lee featured EU in the acclaimed indie film “School Daze”.
I must say that Go-Go has come a long way since the 80’s when I partied at places like Chrystal Skate and the Black Hole. One Four Honey Represent uptown is what we shouted at Club U on Saturday nights with Rare Essence. From appearing on Jay Leno with Ludicrous, and the World MTV awards, to Big G’s long running portrayal on the big hit “The Wire”, the question still remains. When is DC going to get their Props? Take a moment and really listen to the radio. You can hear our music in the rotation. DJ Flex is definitely representing on “Punch Drunk Love” featuring Kane West and Common. Go-Go music will become mainstream before you know it. You cannot deny DC’s raw talent but for so long.

LA Erotica
When I went to Erotica LA 2007, Egypt & Ty of http://www.blackamateurfreaks.com/ exposed me to a world that I would never envision. I only saw this kind of Erotica on the Playboy Channel or through my dirty collections of pleasurable DVDs. Meeting people in the adult entertainment industry was an extremely exciting and intoxicating experience for me, being a closet freak and all. How this battle began is a distant memory compared to a recent promotional campaign led by 50 Cent and his alter-ego “Pimpin Curley”. In conjunction with his many vocal disses on Rick Ross’s “baby mama” Tia, 50 Cent has released an adult video. Here is the kicker. It was generated on a website for the entire world to see for FREE. www.boobooty.com Some may even call this XXX release amateur porn. This video consists of the mother of Rick Ross’s child in raw footage performing various sexual acts with an unknown record executive. To add insult to injury, Pimpin’ Curley narrates the entire scene. This is not your general narration folks. This is an in your face diss session on the characters of Rick Ross and the mother of his child while chanting, “Officer Rickey” periodically throughout the 13 plus minute video.

Despite evidence uncovered by the Smoking Gun that rapper Rick Ross was once employed as a Florida corrections officer, the rapper still denied he ever worked as a CO. So the Smoking Gun went out and got even more evidence. In a new set of documents, the website proves Ross is in denial about his old job, as the Department of Corrections gave TSG an 86-page file on the rapper’s employment, including copies of his birth certificate and his social security card. TSG points out that the address on his application matches that of his mother’s home, and that the name of his mother on the application also happens to be the name of his mother, as evidenced by Trilla liner notes. Despite the report, at least one rapper is standing by Ross’ enormous side, as Trick Daddy said he has no problem with Ross and that the Boss of Miami would still appear on his next album.
Now we all are aware of the ramifications of being involved in a “beef” with 50 Cent. Remember Fat Joe and Ja Rule. How about Murder Inc? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that everyone should bite their tongues when it comes to crossing 50 Cent on wax, or any other forum. I just hope that all of this nonsense does not destroy what Hip-Hop has worked so hard to recover from. We do not need another geographical war between two well known artists, who both are talented. Do Biggie and 2 Pac ring a bell? With 50’s latest stunt, in which some may consider a low blow, he has emptied the entire salt shaker into Rick Ross’s wounds. Yep, it seems that 50 Cent has the money and the power to take this beef to its grave. No pun intended. My question is, how long will this saga continue?
A source tells TMZ 50 Cent plans to release a porn tape featuring one of Rick Ross' baby mamas. We're told 50 bought the tape and will post it on his own site -- and even provide voice-over on it. This is 50!
Guys can you please keep it as word play and do not let your ego destroy what Hip-Hop truly has truly incorporated. Don’t take away our UNITY. I find this whole Beef comical. This is just something to take my mind off the real things that we are face with daily like the recession, unemployment, a rising crime rate, and a lingering recession. Not all people may have my light-hearted views on this repetitious cycle of beef in the Hip-Hop community. Do me a favor guys. Keep it on wax and video, and keep this beef out of the streets you feel me. We want Hip-Hop to persevere, not regress.

Just when you thought it was safe enough for our beloved President to relax and get to the real business at hand, another media source is trying to tarnish him with negative press. TMZ http://www.tmz.com/ , along with other media sources released an article stating that “Obama’s Brother—Gone to Pot.” The police charged his home on a Saturday and the reason is still unknown. He was taken into custody for marijuana possession and resisting arrest. George Obama is the half brother of Barack Obama. The fact that Barack Obama has a half brother totally slipped my mind being as though the President met him once and they barely know each other. The only thing that the President and his half brother have in common is genetics. Here is my dilemma. The Kenyan police went through extreme methods to arrest George Obama. They raided his home and immediately arrested him. “I don’t know why they are charging me”, George told CNN. Here is the kicker folks. He was arrested for a total of one joint of marijuana.

I am not familiar with the Kenyan laws I am not aware of any massive Drug Prevention programs. Can someone please tell me where the fire is on this one? You would think that the press would come up with something a little more damaging than one stick of refer. I can recall my vacation in Costa Rica where one of my buddies asked a waiter in their native tongue, “Donde’ esta verde’?” The waiter fulfilled her request in less than ten minutes. Let us not mention the Netherlands where the police will assist you in lighting your joint if you ask. The strong efforts of the Kenyan police and press are petty, redundant, and borderline comical. George Obama probably went into his back yard, picked up a couple of “Bush weed”; (pun intended) fixed a warm cup of milk and began his day. Who knew that he would be the feature of the next episode of “Cops”?
The Law enforcement agencies here in the United States would be embarrassed at such a find after a raid, and would sweep it under the rug for fear of being the butt of office jokes. The “Jakes” do not want to waste the ink or time filing the paperwork on something that would be barely classified as a misdemeanor. This is a result of the press and right-winged Republicans ongoing quest to discredit our President. Some may think that Barack Obama is and will be the best president this country ever had. Haters are looking feverishly to break the momentum of our first African American President. I implore you all. Please stop the hatin. Our President already admitted to smoking a joint or two in his college years. Just because his half brother’s first name is George does not mean that the presidency is doomed. Both Bushes, (pun intended), already took care of that with their eyes closed chewing tobacco and hunting deer. Did anyone forget about baby George’s cocaine habit? As a result of this breaking news, I guess George Obama will not be invited to any White House events. There goes his VIP access. Here are a few words for the press from Tre’. “Hypocrisy flows evenly through straightened teeth.” You can quote me on that one. If you are part of the Obama’s family tree, run and hide. They are looking for you. If you jay walk, you are in trouble.
